The eyes are the window to the soul, so they say. Is that why eye contact is the thing of the past? Is the lack of eye contact the reason for these superficial relationships? Because the eyes portray a person who has seen things from a view that can never be seen by another. Our eyes paint pictures of where we have been; our eyes cry from the pain and sorrow we experience; our eyes speak louder than our actions, "NOTICE ME! I'm dying inside."
But we don't look into each others eyes. We don't care to learn what those eyes have seen or experienced. Why not? Not because we don't care about the other person. No. I suggest we don't bear the burden of looking into someone's eyes so that our own eyes remain hidden. It's not that we don't care about the other people. It's that we want to protect ourselves by shielding our eyes from another.
If you think about it. If you truly wanted to look into the window to someone's soul, you must use the window to your soul. It's a mutual agreement. A mutual vulnerability. And I think it's when we both are willing to bear our souls to another that real relationship, real friendship occurs. When we give up our pride and look into someone's eyes, then we will find the real person who hides behind lowered eyes.
